Two Cases of Nutritionally Variant Streptococci from Patients with Endocarditis

Abstract
Nutritionally variant streptococci(NVS), referred to as pyridoxal or vitamin B6-dependent, thiol-requiring, or satelliting streptococci, have been reported as important pathogens in 5-6% of bacterial endocarditis. However, no cases of NVS
endocarditis
have been reported in Korea. In this paper, we describe 2 cases of bacterial endocarditis due to NVS(both isolates were identified as Streptococcus adjacens). NVS may be important pathogens in bacterial endocarditis and must be considered when
pleomorphic, gram-variable organisms grow in blood cultures from patients with suggestive clinical findings(Korean J Clin Pathol 1995 ; 15(2) : 273~80).
